EcoHouse Workshop: Local Medicinal Herbs and Your Health — Learn the benefits of herbs and their use in western herbal medicine from a practicing Bay Area herbalist. Take an herb walk around the local community gardens and leave with a cutting of an easy to grow herb and tincture. We will discuss the use of herbs in health care, their growth habits, their distribution throughout the wild, and the practice methods through which medicine is extracted from them. Introduction to Urban Permaculture — Hear and see local permaculture designers from the Ecological Division of Merritt College's Landscape Horticulture Department discuss what's possible in a city. Come see what's been incubating at this little 7 acre gem in the Oakland Hills. Christopher Shein will talk about the large food forest and garden built by students and the Permaculture Design Certificate program. Other classes offered include Natural Building taught by Kevin and Marisha Farnsworth; Growing Mushrooms with Ken Litchfield; and Cycles of Change with Grey Kolevzon, and more. Watershed Poetry Festival — Join former US Poet Laureate Robert Hass, Poetry Flash, the Ecology Center/Berkeley Farmers' Market, and Ecocity Builders at the twelfth annual Watershed Poetry Festival. Since 1996, thousands have gathered together with environmental and literary groups to celebrate writers, nature, and community. Along with Robert Hass, this year's featured writers include poets Michael McClure and Sandra Alcosser and cultural historian Rebecca Solnit. Also performing will be poet and eco-educator Chris Olander, poet and naturalist Maya Khosla, and youth poets from California Poets in the Schools and River of Words. Volunteer: "Alameda Creek Alliance 10th Anniversary" — The Alameda Creek Alliance will celebrate our 10th anniversary in August with a dinner and silent auction fundraiser. Celebrate a decade of organizing and advocating for restoring Alameda Creek and its fisheries. This event will feature food, wine, live music, local celebrity speakers and a silent auction. There are a number of ways you can help: donate an item or activity for our silent auction (environmental, outdoor adventure and flyfishing themed items or activities are especially welcome), ask your business or friends or family to donate an item or activity for the auction, purchase tickets for an event or a gift certificate for an item for the auction, volunteer to help set up at the event, volunteer to help run the silent auction. Film Fest: "Eco-Amok! An Inconvenient Film Fest" — The inconvenient truth is this: cinema has seen it coming for years. How else to account for the black-and-white bestiary that brought us ants the size of SUVs and buffed-up behemoths rising from the ocean floor? Or the more colorful contributions, like a grizzled bear as big as a phone booth, militarized piranhas with excited incisors, or a man-plant with its roots in horror? These are the queer consequences of messing with Mother Nature. From the fearsome fifties right up to the carbon-coughing present, cinema has ogled the aftereffects of ecological abuse and genetic jerry-rigging. Eco-Amok! takes on this prescient patch of filmdom to relish the monstrosities, as well as considering the causes for consternation. Films: "The Hungry Miles" and "Film Work" — Documentary double feature -- Australian Films about class struggle. The first film, "The Hungry Miles", shows the real lives and struggles of the Australian dockers. The second film is "Film Work". The Waterside Workers Federation of Australia supported a film unit that produced ten documentaries for several militant unions between 1953 and 1958.
